EVE'S HEART

A dark veil slips over you, obscuring your vision; it’s cool and clinging, and blocks out all outside sensation. You drift downward . . . as you do, you grow more and more aware of the pulse of your own heartbeat, until it’s a ringing, unpleasant throb in your ears.

. . . after some time, it’s interrupted by a soft splash, and you feel solid rock underfoot.

She taps her chin.

"Except to protect us in games, I suppose."

...Does lying really protect us in games, though?

[I... don't think I've ever played a game where the objective involved lying in some way...]

"In bad games, at least a little."

It's not like we can talk to the other teams during them, though, so it's not like there's anyone to lie to.

[And in the times we've been able to interact with others, Jasper's method of protecting tended to amount to "find a way to attack the spirit of the rules without actually breaking them."]

"Well, no . . . one lies outside them."

[Mmm... Still seems a bit off, though...]

...Still doesn't make sense, though. What kind of lie could stop a team from attacking us, anyways?

"'I will become a monster if my team is killed.'"

...Suppose that could do it, yeah.Then again, Star's a monster too, and she's pretty sure she can't do anything to stop people anyways.

[Not in the same sense you mean, but still. There is nobody in Jasper more enthusiastic about killing people than me, I'm pretty sure.]

"Well, telling people you'd like to kill them does tend to go the other way."

...Yeah. But it's something that's big enough that you shouldn't lie about it. It's not like Star brings it up if it isn't asked, though.

[It just happens that it's asked so freaking often that there is no escape.]

And something like that... It's big enough that one shouldn't lie to themselves. Pretending it's not there doesn't fix anything, it just lets it... grow, and rot.

"Does it ease the urge, to say it?"

Sort of, and sort of not? It reminds Star that she needs to change, that she needs to become stronger...

Does it make Star want to do it less? ...Not sure, exactly... Feels like it's easier to deal with it when you can put it into words, though...

"A channel and a motivation. Hmm. I've lied for so long I forgot those could be a thing."

Huh? But... how? Especially with the motivation one. Even Star had something to try for back home, so...

[Wait, I'm not expressing myself correctly here...]

Doesn't a person need motivation to live? People without that, they're just kind of...

[I really can't express it right...]

"A motivation to tell the truth, I meant."

She sounds bitterly amused: "I have enough duty to live by."

Makes more sense, but... duty isn't quite right, either. It has to be something you want to do. There has to be something, right?

She sets her basket down on the sand.

"I want to travel."

Traveling sounds good, yeah. Is there anywhere you want to see, or just wandering the world?

"It's one and the same, I suppose. I haven't left the Empire in many, many years -- not counting Aather."

Hmm.. Star's never left Japan before coming to Aather, so she can't really tell, since there's a lot to see even without leaving a country, but it does sound good to get out for a while if you can.

"I'd like to get out forever . . ."

That's an option too, if there's nothing worth coming back for.

[I won't judge on this at least, since my own judgement states that the vast majority of people aren't worth it.]

"It's worth coming back for. It just . . . is very fragile . . . when I am in the equation."

? That's a weird way of putting it. That makes it sound like it's fragile because you're there?

"If a country is run by one person who is meant never to disappear, and then they disappear, chaos will ensue."
