EVE'S HEART

A dark veil slips over you, obscuring your vision; it’s cool and clinging, and blocks out all outside sensation. You drift downward . . . as you do, you grow more and more aware of the pulse of your own heartbeat, until it’s a ringing, unpleasant throb in your ears.

. . . after some time, it’s interrupted by a soft splash, and you feel solid rock underfoot.

"Hmmmph..."

[waving at her with a smile]

Mornin', sleepy head~

"Your face 's a heepy sled."

My face is very handsome, thank you very much.

"Ew."

. . . oi! Don't be rude.

She sticks her tongue out at you without opening her eyes.

[s-snort]

What's this laboratory for, anyway? Do you live here?

"It's mine . . . I was the Head Chemist, but I don't have anyone to be head of anymore . . .?

You don't?

Where did everyone go?

"They died."

[Ah. . .]

. . . I'm sorry. Do you get lonely up here, by yourself?

". . . I dream . . . I'm tired, mostly."

She sounds mulish.

What do you dream about?

[curious]

"Anything. Everything. Peace. Forests. Free will. A stable country. Computers in Aather and no more trauma games ever."

[small quirk of a smile]

Those sound like great dreams.

. . . do you think you can see some of 'em come true?

"Not really."

Why not? Dreaming is just the first step, y'know.

"Other people in the heart dream possible dreams."

How d'you know they're impossible?

"Are you going to tell me everything's possible too?"

Not everything. But it's hard to tell if something's possible without trying first, right?

She growls and opens her eyes all the way. "You think the heart doesn't try?"

. . . I never said that. I'm sure it does try. But. . . is it really not your purpose to try, too?

"I try by dreaming. Someone has to hold on to the dreams . . . but I'm so tired."
